JUSTICE AND WITNESS TEAM

The 8 Points of Progressive Christianity include the call to form ourselves into communities dedicated to equipping one another for the work we feel called to do: striving for peace and justice among all people, protecting and restoring the integrity of all God’s creation, and bringing hope to those Jesus called the least of his sisters and brother.

The Justice & Witness Team exists to carry out this calling through its own work and form Faith-into-Action groups to work on today’s inequalities and injustices. This includes addressing issues of poverty, food insecurity and homelessness, providing a safe space for LGBTQ+ individuals following our call as an open and affirming church, providing protection and restoration of the environment and addressing racial injustice, voter suppression, and more.

Some examples of these activities are:

  • Regular donations and collections for area food banks as well as operating our own Little Free Food Pantry on site;
  • Participation in the local Meals-on-Wheels program multiple weeks per year;
  • Donations and support of the Community Relief Fund (CRF) through Community Action Center (CAC) (https://www.cacwhitman.org/) which is used to provide emergency funding for homelessness;
  • Creation of CCUCC’s Gun-Free Zone statement
  • Providing hosting and financial support to Family Promise of the Palouse. CCUCC hosts families on site multiple times per year (https://www.familypromisepalouse.org/);
  • Partnering with Inland Oasis in support of their annual Pride Festival (https://www.inlandoasis.org/) and the LGBTQ+ Youth Support Group.
  • Participating in regular Adopt-a-Highway clean-up activities;
  • Establishment of an electric vehicle charging station in CCUCC’s parking lot for public use.
  • Annual host of the “Ability Experience Bicyclists,” a national fraternal group that raises money for awareness of people with disabilities through their bicycle tours across the county.
  • Hymn singing sessions at local senior care residences.
  • Adoption of CCUCC’s Environmental Justice Covenant

  • Adoption of CCUCC’s statement on Sexism & Women’s Rights.
  • Writing postcards and letters through Vote Forward campaigns to counter voter suppression efforts within the states (https://votefwd.org)
  • Annual support of the Nicaraguan Scholarship Program through ASLA Foundation which provides financial support for students to attend school and college – https://www.aslafoundation.org/what-we-do. Read more about what CCUCC is doing to support this program (https://pullmanucc.org/nicuraguan/
  • Support of the Pullman Child Welfare Annual Christmas Giving Tree (https://www.pullmanchildwelfare.org/).

The Justice and Witness team meets monthly. Members share responsibility for facilitation of the various activities of the team. We share information with the congregation and encourage participation in helping to carry out these important projects.

Faith-into-Action groups are each led by a church member and include other church and community members who are interested in the specific focus of the group.  Please contact ginny.hauser@gmail.com if you would like to join a group.

Currently we have five FIA Groups whose activities include:

  • Racial EquityThe group focuses on issues of racial equity and provides a space for speakers to come and present to our community.  They also offer monthly movie nights on racial equity issues. Open to everyone.
  • Environmental Group – The group recently developed an Environmental Covenant that will guide the work of the team and the church. Read it here.
  • Potluck Plus – Monthly speaker event. Open to the public. Recently long-time local farmer Asa Clark spoke on trends in farming, past, present and future.
  • Music for Seniors – Church musicians and friends share music at local assisted living residences and memory care units.
