Environmental Justice Covenant
CCUCC Environmental Justice Covenant
Adopted January 2023
As we affirm our sacred bonds with God, each other, and all of nature, we commit as individuals and as a congregation to the intertwined responsibilities of protecting a web of life on Earth that thrives and seeks justice for the oppressed.
We commit to learn and to increase awareness of the connections between ecosystem abuse and human suffering based on such factors as race, class, and nationality. As humanity confronts the current and future crises of our damaged planet, we commit with an urgent sense of calling. Let this be reflected in the work, worship, and witness of our congregation.
We will do this by: reducing our consumption and waste; being mindful of our use of the gifts that God provides; and calling on our neighbors and friends to do the same.
We commit to push ourselves, our community, and our nation to take seriously the task that God has given us as stewards of this Earth, its ecosystems, and the creatures they contain, as well as keepers of our siblings in our human family.
In doing so, we are dedicated to work beyond the walls of this church to make good on our promise to God our creator, Jesus our redeemer, and the Holy Spirit, our sustainer.
Summary version:
We commit ourselves as individuals and as a congregation to the intertwined responsibilities of caring for our Earth and seeking justice for the oppressed and we desire that these deeply felt commitments be reflected in the work, worship, and witness of our congregation.
